To: Mettalurgical Engineers, Brass Casting Foundries anywhere in our world
The permanent mold casting process is a modern, efficient way to produce brass castings for plumbing products such as faucets and drains. Even though the initial capital costs are higher than for the sand casting process, the lower the labor cost associated with permanent mold casting can result in lower total cost per casting. The difficulty with achieving the lower costs benefits of permanent molding lies in controlling other costs such as the cost of mold wear, the costs of casting defects and the cost of energy. If these other costs are not controlled, the end result of a permanent molding operation could be high initial capital cost with no offsetting reduction in cost per casting.
Established permanent mold casters have found that using brass alloy that has been treated with our DesofinTM grain refining additive is the key to controlling the cost of mold wear, casting defects and energy. DesofinTM works by reducing the grain size of the metal to be cast. This also results an increase in the fluidity of the molten metal that enables the molding process to be conducted at a lower temperature. This achieves the reduction in energy cost and the reduction in mold wear. The increase in fluidity also enables the metal to fill the mold more consistently with fewer sinks, cracks and hot tears. This results in fewer casting defects and less scrap.
The use of DesofinTM is endorsed by all leading manufacturers of permanent molding equipment. Our most recent DesofinTM is now capable of doing twice the work as previous and will cut your cost in half!
Miller & Engelhardt Desofin, Ltd. is the sole manufacturer of DesofinTM and we supply our products to brass permanent molding companies in all parts of the world. If you would like to try using DesofinTM in your permanent molding process, we will provide samples and technical advice.
